My daughter’s bedroom has gone through so many changes since birth. She’s now entering the teenage years so she wanted a boho inspired bedroom. Her wishlist was something relaxing, stylish and functional. Her overall style is neutral and she loves brands like: Madewell, American Eagle and Free People, so a neutral boho bedroom made the most sense. In this post, I will show you how we created a budget friendly, teen boho inspired bedroom.
Step One: Create Your Inspiration Board
First, I asked her to create a Pinterest board with styles that inspired her and gave me a visual concept to work towards. If you want to see the board we created, head to my Teen Bedroom Pinterest board here. If you do not have Pinterest, you can also get white foam board and create your own design board by attaching pictures and materials you would like to have in the room.
Step Two: Develop and create your project plan.
This step requires asking questions, planning and problem solving, such as:
What are your goals for the space?
This can include how do you want to the space to feel/flow, the function of the space, how is it used daily. Pain points of the space such as temperature, lighting, storage and space solutions, etc.
What action items need to happen?
Examples: Do you need to rip out carpet, demo a wall, paint, install a ceiling fan, new windows, etc.
What projects need to be completed –> in order from start to completion?
Step Three: Take inventory of what you have.
You’d be surprised with what you already own. Shop your home first. We had started the process of updating her bedroom about a year ago with a new headboard, mattress, bedding, and curtains. At that time we had updated the paint color to a neutral gray beige color. I already had the faux fur rug from Costco, and the bookshelves, storage dresser and nightstand from IKEA. I also love faux plants and other wooden decorative items which are placed all over our home, so I grabbed a couple items here and there to place in her room.
Step Four: Make your wish list and purchase products.
An important step in the process is to use the tools you have: Technology and Time. Google is such a great resource in finding exactly what you are looking for. Type in exactly what you want and a list of retailers, blogs, shopping links and images populate. You can find a lot of budget friendly finds. If you find something you love that’s out of your budget, you’re very likely to find something very similar online but I recommend reading customer reviews.
Time is your friend. Be patient. Often times if you are willing to wait you can get it on sale, get a promo code discount, or find it at Home Goods or Marshalls for an affordable price.
Money Saving Tips:
- Check the dollar bin at Target. You’ll find faux plants and fun natural wood decorative pieces that are very budget friendly!
- Check Hobby Lobby ads. Every week you they mark down items at 40-50% off.
- Get the Target App (if you don’t already have it). Aside from frequent sales, you can also save using the 5% RED debit card or Target Circle digital coupons in which you can receive product discounts or 15% off your entire purchase over a $90.
- Place items in your cart, but don’t checkout. Often times if you abandon the cart, retailers will email you a promo code to purchase it.
Step Five: Execute your project plan.
We didn’t have a lot of renovating to do in this space. Most of this boho inspired bedroom was all in the decor, lighting, and space solutions.
Walls. She already liked the paint color of her room, and the window coverings so I didn’t have to update the paint color. I wanted to create one focal wall, so rather than having two rows of short shelving (which she had before), I made one longer row of shelving above her bed. This allowed me to add the decorative elements of the twinkle lighting, artwork, and faux plants above her headboard.
Products: Night Stand, Wall Shelf, Twinkle Lights, Command Hooks, Storage Unit with Baskets, Headboard
Products: Wall Mirror, Dresser, Faux Rug, Young Living Aria Diffuser, Mini Fridge, Curtains
Room arrangement. I really wanted to maximize the space in her room, so I mapped out where the furniture would go to make it feel open and also functional.
Start decorating. This is where I get to add or update the lighting, colors, layers, textures, where are the fun decorative elements come into play. As you can see the before and after of her bed, simple layering of textures can make a huge impact.
I’m still waiting for a few more products to arrive so I will update this post with photos and product recommendations. I also didn’t showcase her closet because that’s another organizational project all by itself so stay tune for a future post.
Hope you found this post to be helpful to you!!
